– What I want to talk about is what’s the hook and the story of what it is you’re selling. If you don’t have one yet, you need to create that. You guys know Drew Manning. He’s one of our Two Comma Club winners and he’s an awesome dude. He’s got a program called Fit to Fat to Fit.

And his story is he was a trainer his whole life and helped a lot of people get skinny but he never actually knew what it was like so he was like, “you know what, I’m gonna get fat, “and then I’m gonna try to get fit again.” So he went and gained 100 pounds and told the whole world, “this is what I’m doing, I’m gaining a bunch of weight. “Doing a big huge thing and I’m gonna get fat “and then I’m gonna lose it again.”

And because of this story, the hook of this story, he got tons of PR, he was on Jay Leno, all sorts of stuff. And now, whatever he sells, he’s just like, “hey I’m Drew, I’m the Fit to Fat to Fit guy.” And then anything he says after that, people give him money.

You want to know why? Cause the hook of the story is so good. What’s the story? You gotta find those stories that are out there. They don’t have to be super grandiose at first, but you need to have a story behind things, right? Okay, so there’s your assignment.

Anyway, with that said, you guys enjoy part two of the Gary Vee show. – Guys, nobody remembers the part where Michael Jordan couldn’t get to the finals cause the Pistons were beating them every single time. – [Male Offscreen] Isaiah Thomas. – You know what I mean? Guys, let me really unleash you doing more (bleep expletive) Nobody remembers the losses.

As long as you have a win. – Is there any trends that you see or platforms or any advice that you see with women entrepreneurs primarily, my age, thirties, forties? – Yeah, so the thing, you know it’s funny, Katie, right? Hey, hi. (crowd laughs) Katie said the most important part, I’ve become unbelievably fascinated and empathetic about the difference between men and women, you know. I’m super fascinated by it from a business standpoint. That’s my lens to the world. It’s harder to be one hundred percent yourself when you’re a woman than a man.

I genuinely believe that because men are dick faces. Right? And so, the answer to your question is to be one hundred percent, radically, transparently you. I’m also massively empathetic how that’s difficult for everybody, especially attractive women. – How do you balance work and family? How do you do it? – By first and foremost not adhering to the current state of political correctness that everybody here has deployed on me. Most of all, right. And second, extremism.

I almost took the whole entire month of August off. Like I go all in, right. When I’m in this, like Monday through Friday, I do not see my kids pretty much at all. Thirty nine weeks of the fifty two weeks in the year. Just what it is. And then on weekends and seven weeks, eight weeks of vacation a year I’m all in the other way. That’s how I do it. For me. But that is only uniquely going to work if me and my partner in crime are aligned on that strategy, audit that strategy every day. By the way, I don’t even want to do it anymore.

As now they are eight and five and not five and two, they’re just more interesting to be around. You know? (crowd laughs) So, for example, I guarantee you in 24 more months, this exact trip, they’re here and we go to see the Grand Canyon or something. I’m so sad that so many people do certain things in parenting because that’s what the other parents think they should be doing. Like, I don’t know. I just wanna make a very important statement that I implore every parent in this room understands.

Everything that is right in parenting right now, by the common standards, will not be in 20 years. You’re going to be judged one way or the other. – When you grow rapidly, how do you embed the culture to make sure that it grows with the right people? So we built values, manifestos… – Ready? Ready? How do you get muscles by doing pushups? – You do it consistently every day. – I spend an ungodly amount of my time on HR. Now, I have 800 employees.

Next year I’m going to mandate that I see every one of my employees every month for 15 minutes. Which is going to eat up BIG amounts of time. – So literally you’ve taken that one one. – The math is daunting. – When I do the one-on-one time it always works. But I’m just thinking now from scale at the same point. – Scaling the unscalable is how you build long term wealth. – (bleep) dude, that’s a good one. – Thanks bro. I didn’t get up here for no rooks. – Now we know why you get paid to stand up there.

My second question was, okay, as you grow obviously you’ve got haters. I’m sure that people don’t like you and whatever. – Sure. – So I always focus on the mission and the vision and the people that we’re helping, right? But when you get certain people, I mean it still affects me when I… – Of course. – So, how do you overcome that so you can keep growing? – Empathy. – For them? – Yes. – And just for their life circumstances? – Sure. If a human being can generate hate, they’re not in a good place. – Okay. So what do you do mentally, in mindset, to just keep going? – I deploy gratitude that I’m not them. – I feel like an entrepreneur on accident, honestly. And the thing that I love to do is the business that I do that’s making me money.

But recently I’ve started being way more vulnerable about the whole chip on the shoulder thing and in telling my story. And that’s resonating with a lot of people. And that is (bleep) hard. I hate doing that. I’m very introverted. I don’t like being out there that much but that’s what seems to be making the biggest impact. – I have great news. That’s binary. Either you do more of it and you get used to it, and like everything in life, once you get used to it it just becomes your norm and you didn’t realize it. Now you may never be the most extroverted.

Everybody here can be a better singer, dancer, basketball player. They may not become Lebron, but if you do it every day, you get better. You keep putting yourself out there every day, you’ll get better. So you can either choose to do that or you can say I don’t like it. I’ll leave the money on the table cause I love the privacy and the private life and not having to engage, and you do that.

It’s your choice. You’re in charge. – Are you an advocate for doing what’s harder though? – I’m an advocate on doing what you want to do. Not because I said so or your friend said so. I’m an advocate of you doing what you want to be doing. But I always encourage to taste more. Cause it works. Do you know how many people here hate oysters but have never had one? (audience laughing) I think about that (bleep) every day. (audience laughing) That’s how I think about business. Like you’ve made a judgment on something yet you’ve never done it. I already know you’re going to do more of it because you’ve already done the hardest part.

Which is you’ve done it. – Just really quickly. Is there anything that is hard for you? (Gary laughs) Your mindset, the way that you think about things, you’re like ‘I am confident and I can do this’. But is it hard… – Yes, yes. – …to get up sometimes in the morning sometimes. – No. Nope. Spelling is (bleep) impossible. (crowd laughing) – I can’t read for (bleep). If I was reading from a teleprompter right now I would crumble and be out of here. Can’t read for (bleep). Like, you know, fencing, probably is hard. (crowd laughing) I’m really way below average in swimming. Poor swimmer. I always think like, (bleep) I’ll be super pissed if I die… We get (bleep) up, and if I have to swim further then everybody. Yeah, there’s (bleep).

You’re asking me that, as somebody who knows a lot about me, because I don’t spend any time on it. We all suck at (bleep). So like I don’t care how you judge mine, you’ve got (bleep) too. So because I don’t care about that, the only reason people spend time on their weaknesses is because it’s everybody else’s opinion on it that they’re trying to avoid. I don’t care about your opinion about my weakness cause I know you’ve got them too. So let’s just move on. (loud, inspiring music)

When I got done wrestling, I didn’t work out for like, eight years, I gained a bunch of weight and I didn’t believe that it affected performance. You know that brain fog you get sometimes? I used to get it all the time. When I finally started to try to get back in shape, lost some weight, it’s amazing how much clearer things were.

It’s easier to focus. the more your body is running optimally, the more your mind runs optimally. Eventually, Alex Charfen talked about this, he said, if you had a million dollar race horse, what would you do with it? And say, oh well you’d feed it the best food, give it the best supplements, you’d take care of it, all these kinds of things, And he’s like, so then how can you bring a multimillion dollar year business, when you treat yourself like a race horse. (upbeat music) If you wanna be at peak performance all the time, it’s not just your mind, it’s your body.

They go hand in hand. (upbeat music). – You want the truth? The truth is, I’m a huge believe in having a trainer. Many times when I come to the gym and just basically lift weights and do nothing, and having a trainer actually keeps you accountable. You just have to have a coach in life in every aspect. – This right here, this is Mark Schultz, and he was my wrestling coach at BYU. My roommate and I were sitting in our dorm room and all of a sudden we heard this knock on the door.

We open the door an it’s coach Shultz. He’s an olympic champ, he went to the UFC, and probably one of the toughest human beings on this planet. – [Announcer] Too much blood even for the ref. – [Russell] He hands me this VHS video tape, it says total violence on it, and he’s like, this is all my best wrestling mat moves. He’s like, watch this every day and you’ll become a better wrestler.

I was like okay, and he’s like, wait hold on. Go get your wallet. I hand it to him, he opens it up, looks at my money, takes it all out of this wallet, puts it in his pocket, and hands me back an empty wallet. Coach, what’s going on? Why’d you take my money? And he’s like, I’m gonna teach you a lesson right now, that’ll serve you for the rest of your life. He’s like, if I gave you that tape, he’s like, you’ll never watch it.

But now that you’ve invested everything you have, all the money you have in it, because you invested everything, he’s like, you’ll… you’re gonna use it, your gonna watch it, you’re gonna pay attention and you’ll become a better wrestler because of it. I learned the moves, I became a better wrestler, all because I invested in my education. So as soon as we get done lifting today, we’re gonna crafts on it and freeze, because that would get our brain at optimal performance.

Alright, so what’s gonna happen, we turned it on, it’s gonna drop to about negative 140 degrees Celsius. – Geeze it’s so cold.   The entire thing will fill up with like, liquid nitrogen and we’ll jump in and you stay in for about three minutes. It feels like we’re sitting on an iceberg! [Videographer] – Now for men, is this gonna cause permanent shrinkage at all? – And then after that we’ll be heading in. The team is already there early this morning getting everything set up.

They’re setting up an actual telethon. – [Mark Schultz] You have never gone through the experience of paying for information. How can you sell the idea someone should pay for information? And I’ve found that if they’ve never done it, I don’t want them as a speaker, the obstacle is too hard for me to overcome, but if someone is adept, I took every penny and every dollar in my wallet to get information I needed.

When you told me that story long ago, it resonated with me. That’s exactly why you’re good at this, because you know what it feels like to give up everything in your wallet to get something that you know is gonna make a difference to you. (music beat) – Yeah I think of all the things that we do, I think the Funnel Hacking Live is probably the most important, most valuable thing that we produce and put on.

It costs us over a million dollars to put on the event. And I want every entrepreneur to be there. But the problem is, is also of everything we sell, it’s by far the hardest thing to sell. You think about software information products, it’s like an impulse buy, right? With this, it’s not impulse buy because someone’s gotta go and they have to get work off, and they have to convince their spouse, and they have to find babysitters for their kids, and they gotta flight and hotels and tickets are selling really well and consistently, but we need more tickets.

We need to do some big things to sell tickets. We had a meeting probably two or three weeks ago, and we’re just like, okay, what can we do to sell tickets and we’re brainstorming a bunch of ideas and all of a sudden in my head, I have no idea how it popped into my head but I started remembering PBS and little telethons that I used to watch as a little kid. – [TV Host] Call in and use credit cards.

[Russell Brunson] They show you a movie like Wizard of Oz, and so the whole family watching the Wizard of Oz and then in the middle it would stop and hey, really quick before we keep you from watching the show, the way we are able to stay on T.V. as a network is, we raise funds, and they had the host and behind the host was all these people who were taking calls, and like, call this number and donate some money to keep us on air.

And all of a sudden I was like, what if we did a telethon? I don’t know, what if we just did a fun show, I just tell stories and then we got people behind me answering calls and trying to get people to call in and then, when are we doing it, we’re like, oh, in a week and a half from now. (upbeat music) – This is one of those things that could be like the most brilliant marketing idea in the history of marketing as we know it. Or it could be the biggest train wreck we know. – [Announcer] Five, four, three, two, one, we’re live! – [Russell Brunson] We’re actually live? – [Announcer] We’re live! – Ah we’re live! If you watch an infomercial you know that people are flipping the channels all the time, so infomercials for like a 26 and a half minute infomercial they will repeat the call action three times.  This is the same thing as some people’s Facebook feeds, or YouTube feeds, and right away we’re jumping in, so we have to make the entire sale argument. Every, about 10 minutes we start from the beginning and re-tell it, hook people in, give them your side, and have the sales again, so it kept happening. That’s the whole game of marketing, right? It’s like hook, story, offer, and grab them and get the attention long enough to be able to make your message. – So I already showed you guys the video from our very first Funnel Hacking Live ever where we had over 600 people. The second Funnel Hacking Live was where we had 1200 people there. Third one was in Dallas, 1500 people and this was the first year that Tony Robbins came. I think when we left last night, it was like 160 or so tickets had been sold.

Which one thing is exciting, but the second thing is by the time I left yesterday, over 17,000 people had viewed the telethon which is cool because that means 17,000 people who didn’t buy, are the ones right now talking to their spouse, talking to their kids, trying to see if the dates will work, trying to get work off, and so, it will linger for the next, probably, three or four weeks afterwards.

And then now that it’s done and it’s live on Facebook and on YouTube, and now we’re buying ads to it so, so we’ll continue to keep seeing this for the next couple of weeks. And my guess, when all is said and done, we’ll probably sell five or six hundred tickets from the telethon. Thank you to everyone for making that a possibility. That was insanely cool! As you know we just got done with our viral video launch event, which turned out amazing. And our keynote speaker was Gary Vaynerchuck. And in his contract he said we are not allowed to stream nor share his presentation.

But then he did the presentation and he messaged me after and said ‘That was probably one of the best presentations ‘I’ve ever given’. I was like, ‘Sweet man can I promote it on the podcast?’ And he was like, ‘You know what? ‘Go for it.’ For all of you, my fans and followers, people who listen to me, you know that I keep my podcasts nice and clean.

I don’t swear, curse or anything. Gary does a lot. So, I had my brother go through and beep out all the bad words. So hopefully it will still be PG rated for all of the kids at home. And that’s kinda the game plan. So hopefully you enjoy this episode of the podcast.

I’ve always thought about that, (beep) wrote a book, called Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook five years ago on this. I wasn’t doing that.

So, now the AskGaryVee show is on Facebook Watch and the DailyVee is on YouTube, when DRock is, wherever the (beep), D Rock? Hey, you know, now I can say, what’s up, YouTube, whereas I couldn’t do that before and those little nuances (beep) matter. I broke them up mainly because of Facebook Video, now that there is Watch, I’m fascinated. Any of you watch a show called yet on Facebook Watch, just raise your hands, just curious. Higher. Right, so this intrigues me.

Everybody here has to watch one. Not because, I don’t watch (beep). I watched one, the Ball Family, because I just wanna see (beep) they doing. To me this is the most interesting thing that I’m doing, that the good market isn’t. You’ve gotta taste everything. Because I watched Watch and I watched it for kinda four days in a row and looked, I understood what (beep) they were doing, so I sent them an email, I pitched them a show, and they bought it. Right?

So, now we’ll have, kind of anybody can put a show on Facebook, right, like a page, a Watch Page, which everybody should be doing here, I’ll have my YouTube show and now I’m gonna have a produced by Facebook show that’s gonna get big even more. Listen man, I talk and like do and hustle and all this, I do so much more than I talk which is (beep) crazy, ‘cos my mouth is always running, but I’m just doing. I never think, I’m fancy. So many people in here, I know you, so many people here make it a little bit and get fancy, stop doing the (beep) that got them there. That’s the minute you’re (beep) dead. I’m sure a lot of people here realize, who have come into money, it’s not as great as advertised for a lot of people. Some people love it.

They like watches and lambos and houses and that (beep) rad. Mazel tov. (laughter) Other people don’t and you start questioning what the (beep), right? Because when you’ve got nothing and you’re on the come-up and you’ve got numbers in your head, whether it’s a million or five or three or whatever the (beep) it is, it’s (beep) empty when you get there for a lot of people.

And so, you know, I’m just trying to make sure, people are being thoughtful. I know a lot of you have heard me rant on this, I do think entrepreneurship has taken a turn towards club promotion, and that’s just dangerous. It’s just dangerous for the people that … I don’t give a (beep). It’s dangerous because people don’t realize they need to build the business, not a perception that they’re good at business. –

Eventually you’ll lose, right? Eventually time, you don’t have enough time to do all the opportunity. So you’re crippled by opportunity. You just have to go that route, otherwise you’ll just gonna spend all your time thinking about the process of making the best decision. And you’re gonna waste being able to do four things which would have included the two things you been debating for the last (beep) day. Everybody’s saying No. Everybody’s saying No to (beep). ‘Cos they think they’re being thoughtful or they’re smart. You know how many people say No, that aren’t even fancy enough to say yes yet?

So, I just say yes, man, a lot. – How do you see this political correctness and what do you do to mitigate that in your company? – (puffs) (laughter) So, it’s a really good question, Rob, and it’s a really tough one. Couple of things. Number one … said something the other day, that finally articulated how I feel about all of it. Which is, I sit in front and I’m like (beep). People … so there’s only one place in my life, where I am not logical or practical: American Football. (laughter) Against all data, I think that the Patriots are cheaters and Bill Belichick is a terrible guy and even though Tom Brady is like clearly, and I’ve literally spent money on investigative journalism, he’s the nicest human being ever, I still say things like but yeah, he left his pregnant wife for Gisele, he’s a piece of (beep). Even talking right now, the chemicals in my body are different. I feel it, I hate them so much. (laughter) I really want Bill Belichick to die. (laughter) Like … I don’t even … You know it’s funny. I wonder if people think I’m going for … I want it. (laughter) So, cool, we’ve established that, right? I’m clearly irrational, over emotional, not logical and just the worst version of myself in that one narrow place. I mean there are people who are fans of me, who’ve DM’d or have tweeted that I’m a bad guy. I mean, I yell at children at games. I’m not joking, you know how people get beer muscles? You know that term?

I go to a game and even though everybody would probably be able to beat me up, I wanna fight you, ‘cos it feels better than feeling the pain of your team beating mine, right? (laughter) Like a week ago I realized, holy (beep), that’s how blindly is now about politics. You’re either red or blue and you deploy no logic, no rationale. You’re blindly emotional, you have no idea what the (beep) you’re talking about and that’s it.
